Pregnancy and exercising: We talk to Nkateko “Takkies” Dinwiddy

Nkateko Dinwiddy (popularly known as “Takkies”) is a businesswoman, choreographer, wife, and mother who has taken the fitness and dance world by storm. We chat with her about how she breaks a sweat and stays healthy during her pregnancy.

What motivates you to keep exercising throughout your pregnancy?

Working out is a big part of my lifestyle and it makes me feel so good. Pregnancy has its ups and downs and there are just days where you feel tired. When I workout it gives me a great boost of energy to help me kick start my day. It also makes me feel stronger and more in control of my body. I love my body and I believe in taking care of it where possible because it does so much for me.

“When I work out it gives me a great boost of energy to help me kick start my day.”

How do you find the time to exercise with your toddler at home?

I introduced my home workout sessions to Sana before she could even walk so, I think as time went by it clicked that this is what mama does. Now that she walks and is very busy, I involve her by entertaining her, and I play with her in between my workouts so it feels like a fun activity.

What are your favourite exercises to perform now that you’re pregnant?

Dance fitness, home workoutsOpens in a new window, yoga and running around with Sana.
I love switching up my workouts but now that I’m pregnant there are certain exercises I can’t really do. Pregnancy comes with a lot of body changes, so I’ve incorporated more stretches than usual just to ease back pain and feeling uncomfortable.

How many times a week do you exercise, and on average how long are your sessions?

Every day feels like a workout with my little one but I make sure I stretch every day for about 30 minutes and I exercise 3-4 times a week for 30-45 minutes.

Are there any exercises you miss that you can’t do now?

The only exercise I miss doing is ab workouts. I love the feeling of the burn I get when I do them and they make my core so strong.

What is your go-to food to give you energy for your workout?

An energy boost smoothie definitely gets me going. What I love about smoothies is that they don’t feel too heavy so I can enjoy my workout.

“Stretch before and after each workout out session and listen to your body throughout”

What advice do you have for first-time mothers who want to keep fit during their pregnancy?

I would first advise that they get clearance from their doctor to exercise. Once you get the go-ahead try different exercises so you can find the ones you really enjoy. Try switch up your workouts so you don’t get bored or make excuses, not to workout. Stretch before and after each workout out session and listen to your body throughout. There will be days where your body just wants to relax and that’s ok. Eat healthy, drink lots of water, and take care of your body, mind, and soul, it’s all connected.

What’s your favourite genre of music to listen to during workouts?

Afro beats. It’s upbeat, exciting and keeps me going for ages. Working out to your favourite songs definitely makes it more fun.
